Before purchasing this DVD space, I had hoped that I was purchasing material I never saw before. I was sort of disappointed to ogle that the History Channel had keep together a compilation of previously aired shows featuring rather dilapidated material. There are three biographies that mask Lincoln, Lee and Davis. The Lee and Davis episodes are entirely taken from the Civil War Journal series. On disc #2, a witness at the Frosty Harbor Battle is brought in but that came from the Civil War Combat Series. Again, these are not recent productions and can be found or represented in other series availabe from the History Channel. Most welcome was the copy of the documentary called April 1865 that recently aired earlier this year (2003) . April 1865 takes a examine at the kill of the Confederacy and how the nation dealt with the ending of the war and the loss of President Lincoln.

Had I known that this DVD status contained faded material I already have, I probably would have settled to win only the copy of April 1865. Together, all of the programs are very informative and enjoy a lot of titanic insight although I would have prefered modern material. Quality wise, this is a broad station, though I give it a 4 because a lot of the material is older and not current.

I bought this DVD in 2003 and decided to concept it again the other night, finding it unprejudiced as entrancing now as then.

The 2-disc position is divided into two parts, with the first disc being largely based on Jay Winik’s spectacular bestselling book, APRIL, 1865; the program includes several well-known writers and educators, such as William Davis, James Robertson, and Brian Pohanka among others of the Civil War on hand to give comments. Further, this first disc is broken down into April 1865: The Month That Saved America, and Civil War Combat: The Tragedy At Icy Harbor.

The second disc comes from A&E network prior to the History Channel going on the air; the disc has a biography of Abraham Lincoln, and General Robert E. Lee, with a Civil War Journal biography of Jefferson Davis. A final added feature is a copy on two screens of the Gettysburg Address.

My wife and I bought this at one of the Virginia battlefield sites in 2003 prior to returning home after visiting the ancient and unique Cool Harbor battlefields arrive Richmond, and Appomattox Court House. We both enjoyed viewing these discs again and again; enjoying all of Virginia so great, that we moved from Ohio in 2006, and are now living in Virginia!

If you are involved in the 1864-1865 Lee-Grant Overland Campaigns in Virginia, or the kill of the war from Richmond to Amelia Court House to Sayler’s Creek and finally Appomattox Court House, these discs will bring you untold enjoyment.

Based upon M. M. Kaye’s best selling current of the same name, this film is well acted and attractive. It is a account station during the time of the British Raj in India. The two characters central to the film are Ash (Ben Atrocious), an Englishman who spent the formative years of his life believing that he was Indian, and Anjuli (Amy Irving), a half caste Indian princess. Ash and Anjuli spent a fraction of their childhood growing up together, until palace intrigues forced Ash and his Indian foster mother to glide. As a prepubescent youth, he is informed of his English heritage and sent to England for his education and Anglicization.

Returning to India many years later as a young man, Ash becomes a portion of a British regiment called the Guides. With a star studded cast that includes the likes of Omar Shariff, Christopher Lee, Sir John Gielgud, and Rossano Brazzi, this is a film what will retract the viewer’s imagination. I read and loved the original upon which this film was based, and while it is not a faithful adaptation of that astonishing book, the film stands on its hold powerful merits. It is meant to entertain and that it most certainly does.

This two disc DVD is somewhat minute in what it offers, however, in terms of features, which is exiguous to a scene index, some production notes, and a brief biography of M.M. Kaye. In terms of its quality, while the sound is excellent, the visuals are somewhat grainy at times and washed out looking. It is too poor that they decided to do the transfer from video to DVD on the cheap. In doing so, they did “The Far Pavilions” a disservice. Level-headed, it is a DVD well worth having in one’s collection, as the yarn is such a exciting fable.

I loved ‘Far pavillions’ the book. I got myself the video after I read the book from raze to kill. The generous thing about the movie is that the picturization is perfect. Like all other Ishmail Merchant movies, Far Pavillions is finely done with lots of attention paid to the details. My only complaint is that the director did not utilize considerable time on Ash’s (the hero’s) childhood and unbiased showed bits of it during the titles. Ash’s grown up life has a lot to do with the childhood that he spent at Gulkote. None of that is shown. There are times when it feels as though the film maker is trying to mercurial forward things. I know that this is a 5 hour film, but then it is based on a book that is at leat 1000 pages long and took 14 years to complete. Why not give the author some credit for her work. I like the scheme india has been depicted and both the lead actors (Ben substandard) and the lady who plays Anjuli did a spacious job. The cast also includes some noted Indian and Holywood actors like Saeed Jaffery, Omar Sharief, Rossano Brazi etc. If you admire the book, you will probably savor the film. The only jam is that you will feel it is all on rapid forward.

The five star rating I gave Night of the Living Slow is, of course, for the new, uncut, unadulterated edition. The fresh is, quite simply, the most shocking movie I’ve ever seen, even when compared to fright classics like Diabolique (the modern French version), Psycho, Rosemary’s Baby, Halloween and The Knowing. I saw NOTLD when I was 9 years aged on Creature Features at midnight after a funeral. I had nightmares for the next two nights. The film smooth gives me the chills whenever I search for it (usually at Halloween) .

When the 30th Anniversary Edition came out, I bought it on VHS as I was bright to perceive what they termed as “current footage.” What I got was a nefarious mess that butchered the modern film, removed the unusual music for a abominable synthesizer procure and added pointless footage that makes the viewer want to grind his teeth down to the gums. One of the additions is a unusual character: a fire and brimstone preacher. While the acting in the recent is amateurish, at best, the “actor” who plays the preacher makes the novel cast discover like Oscar winners by comparison. He snarls, and howls and gnashes his teeth like he has rabies. Even more ridiculous is the extra footage of Bill Hinzman — the “cemetary zombie” in the recent. The extra footage shows Hinzman’s character emerging from the grave, then cuts to the current 1968 opening footage with Judith O’Dea and Russell Streiner. It’s absolutely ridiculous as Hinzman looks 30 years older in the fresh footage. In addition, there are more zombies and a novel ending to the film that makes no sense whatsoever. This “modern” version is a share of trash that desecrates the most homely film of all time. Avoid it like the plague!

Okay…as I’d feared, my negative review of the John Russo-massacred “30th Anniversary Edition” of Night of the Living Plain has been lumped unwittingly into this product’s review, so I’ m writing this one to elaborate.

This DVD edition is the best edition I’ve seen of the film yet. Anchor Bay may have raised the ires of legions of Living Insensible fans by releasing the sacrilegious 30th Anniversary Edition, but Elite Entertainment did apt by this current edition.

George A. Romero’s personal appreciation appears in the abet of this DVD — this immediately restores our faith. And the contents don’t disappoint — the record and sound are estimable, and though this doesn’t exactly have the richest batch of bonus materials (sets like the pleasurable 3-disc edition of Dario Argento’s Suspiria and the unique double-disc Re-Animator both feature loads of extras), it is a nice solid collection. You earn a Duane Jones interview (sadly with only audio and no image, but aloof tremendous) ; an on-camera chat between Judith Ridley (Judy) and Marilyn Eastman (Helen) ; the hilarious student-film spoof “Night of the Living Bread” by Kevin S. O’Brien (which also appeared in the double-cassette VHS edition) ; two commentary tracks with Romero, Russo, Russ Streiner, Eastman, Karl Hardman and others. One very illuminating fraction of this DVD for non-film-scholars is visually tedious but informative — several histories outlining the beginning of Romero’s Latent Image company, on Hardman and Eastman’s company, and how the two were married to acquire Night of the Living Tedious.

THIS is the lawful edition of Night of the Living Boring, the one to catch for both fans and non-fans alike. It includes all the critical people (peek that Russo, Streiner and Bill Hinzman were included in this release, despite their criminal participation in the 30th Anniversary Edition), and it presents the film the device it wants to be seen.

Many of the best films of 2008 were gloomy and melancholic (Revolutionary Road; The Reader; The Wrestler), with one rare exception: Happy-Go-Lucky. Writer/director Mike Leigh’s (Secrets and Lies; Topsy-Turvy; Vera Drake) charming unusual comedy stars Sally Hawkins as Poppy, a thirty-year-old, free-spirited, North London schoolteacher with an infectious worship for life. After her bicycle is stolen, she decides to capture weekly driving lessons. Her creepy, verbally-abusive instructor, Scott (Eddie Marsan), proves to be Poppy’s complete opposite. There are many things to savor about Leigh’s film–a film that lives up to its title. Happy-Go-Lucky is a film that would have never been by the Hollywood studios that think male-driven movies by Judd Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin; Knocked Up) and Adam Sandler to be favorable comedy models. In 2008, both Sally Hawkins and Anna Faris (The House Bunny) transcended that Hollywood formula with their novel humorous performances. It is no surprise that reviewers including Roger Ebert, Novel York Times critics Manohla Dargis, Stephen Holden, and A.O. Scott, Recent York Magazine critic David Edelstein, and Los Angeles Times critic Kenneth Turan are now including Happy-Go-Lucky among their Top Ten Films of 2008. The film recently received a Golden Globe nod for Best Motion Picture-Comedy. Happily recommended as one of the best films of 2008.

This is all about Poppy, played by Sally Hawkins. Single in London. Sure, blissful, and generally embodies the title of the movie. Every location is to be faced with proper spirit, a light attitude, and cheer.

At the beginning it seems that she will overrun a challenge like a tank running over a building in a WW II flick. Smiles. Banter. Humor. Irrepressible. Even when alone.

The challenges grow. A spot student. A vagrant in a deserted section of town. A doctor visit. A dance instructor with issues.

And then the unique champion for Driving Instructor From Satan, played by Eddie Marsan. These scenes are classics. As in many movies confrontation is necessary to edifying comedy or drama. The theater I saw this in was laughing its collective heads off. The driving lessons build me smile even as I type this.

How Poppy reacts to each challenge – and how others react to Poppy – is the core of this movie. The site is mostly a string of episodes. Mike Leigh does an outstanding job directing, finding a second level to each position. Amusing and elated. But also thoughtful and a tiny gritty.

Sally Hawkins should be up for an Oscar in 2009, but that is a whole other discussion.

If you treasure classic films and you fancy special effects, then you are undoubtedly passionate about the films of legendary Ray Harryhausen, and this is one of his best. In this movie, Harryhausen uses his stop-motion technique in color for the first time (and the print here is terrific) to explain the story of Sinbad (Kerwin Mathews) as he sails the seas, forms an uneasy alliance with an sinful magician (Torin Thatcher) and battles a Cyclops, a two-headed Roc and a dragon. Other memorable effects include the genie Berani and the interior of his magic lamp, the Princess Parisa being shrunk and the servant woman who is turned into a dancing half-woman, half-snake. The action starts factual away and continues throughout the film, and Bernard Herrmann’s music is, as always, absolutely perfect.

DVD extras are splendid, and include: a record of the unusual poster; trailers from other Harryhausen features; two interview featurettes, each 12 minutes long; a 3-minute featurette about the Dynamation process; and a one-hour feature about Ray Harryhausen. This is a huge package — and for you fervent polyglots out there, the film can be heard in English, Spanish or Portuguese, while subtitles are available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Korean or Thai!

Having diminutive children who are becoming involved in “scary movies”, I’ve found that the Harryhausen ouevre is a immense blueprint for them to catch thrills and chills without gore, and a astounding design for me to reconnect with my childhood joys as well. The whole family has a huge time watching these terrific films. I’m really pleased they’re being re-released in such high quality and with such lively dvd extras.

Superb!

This film was always a common of mine since the first time I saw it.

Visually the print on this DVD is fabulous. The colors are vibrant and the images are incredibly arresting, crisp and definite.

In particular, you can really devour Ray Harryhausen’s Special Effects that he laboriously produced for this film. They don’t discover blurred or out of focus as they have on previous prints. They are presented here as they were intended to be seen in their entire splendor and brilliance. It is extraordinary what he did with an eight-inch great stop-motion model of a skeleton.

Ken Kolb’s screenplay elevates this film beyond the boundaries of what could have been honest another fantasy monster movie. He brings depth to the characters and uses dialogue to increase the suspense of the tale. Along with director Nathan Juran and all the other filmmakers an anecdote fairytale unfolds and is preserved on film.

Bernard Herrmann’s bag is a showstopper and as always accentuates the images on the shroud adding mood and enhancing the overall visual finish for the viewer. Herrmann went on to bag three more Harryhausen films: “The Three Worlds of Gulliver,” “Mysterious Island” and “Jason and the Argonauts.” Bernard Herrmann’s collaboration with Ray Harryhausen and producer Charles Schneer equaled that of his collaboration with Alfred Hitchcock.

Kerwin Mathews is ever so stoically brave as Sinbad. He is very righteous in this role as he brings energy and conviction to the fraction. He is a man with mission and will not bend or be swayed until he brings it to finality. It is a shame that Mathews never went on to greater shroud accomplishments.

Trained for the stage at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Shakespearean actor Torin Thatcher is the consummate nasty magician, Sokurah. He too brings conviction to his role as he is dedicated to the forces of despicable and darkness.

Visually this is far pleasurable to the Laser Disc version. The Laser Disc was issued in full-frame and not quite as bewitching. However, the Laser Disc version was issued with the soundtrack in stereo. I was very disappointed that this DVD was not issued in stereo. That would have made it completely satisfying.

However, the images are so spectacularly presented here it is almost a minor point. Thank the gods for Dynamation.

I saw this episode of NOVA when it was originally aired and I idea it was handsome savory. I reflect its weird that of all the noted men of science, Newton seems to have the least “air time” when it comes to these docu-dramas. Especially since Newton’s orignal work is far greater then Einstein’s (who didn’t even make any of the mathematics or even all of the methods he employed for his relativity theory), as well being more technically difficult to effect for the time.

I’ve read parts of “Never at Rest,” what is hailed as the definitive biography of Newton and the from what I’ve read (and what was actually mentiond in this production) there seems to be no contradictions. It even mentions that the Principia is written entirely in the analytic geometry of Descartes (rather then the Calculus) .

The facaulty they have interviewed for this production are very enthralling. Espeically the one MIT professor, Walter Lewin behaves so eccentricly that he seems like the cliche Physics professor of accepted culture.

An teach I noticed that they have ignored completly, is the spat that Newton had with Leibniz on who discovered Calculus first. From my concept this was a really monstrous portion of Newton’s history (he veteran his academic site to sort of attack Leibniz credebility) . But at least as pure mathematics is concerned, Leibniz is really the more necessary of the two . All in all, I hope there are more of these docu-dramas on Newton in the future, as this is certainly an individual whose importance is central in the history of the West (and humankind) .

“Earth Girls Are Easy” is a musical sci-fi comedy about valley-girl Valerie (played by Geena Davis) living in 1980’s Los Angeles, and who is engaged to a cheating, boyfriend doctor named Ted (played by Charles Rocket) . Wild things happen when the alien trio are taken to a dance club and letting them drive in California traffic!

The fact that this film is also a musical only adds to the humor as there are several unusual songs by Julie Brown!
